Pierre Haubensak

(*1935 in Meiringen) is one of the most important Swiss painters. He overviews a substantial career with many solo and group exhibitions. Already in 1958 to 1960, immediately after his studies in Basel and Geneva, his big curiosity let him choose Paris as his domicile. In the 1960s he had a studio and a house in Ibiza and from 1969 to 1977 he lived in New York. Since 1978 he lives and works in Zurich. After a first show in 2014 in which we presented shaped canvases, an early group of works from 1967-68 followed two further exhibitions 2015 and 2019. In these two exhibitions Pierre Haubensak created new groups of works. In both exhibitions Pierre Haubensak as always exploited the possibilities of painting – in his recent show 2019 he even renounced to use a brush, but confined in using a scraper made of sheet metal. In this exhibition Pierre Haubensak unfolded a sovereign late work. His practice is comparable to the one of a composer, structuring and creating music. Within a rigid pattern Pierre Haubensak develops different systems of images. His paintings describe forms of possibilities and this openness unlocks in the contemplation as well: The images can designate abstract forms but also figurative constellations. This as-well-as, this oscillation lends the works a freedom of assumption. The images of Pierre Haubensak possess a deliberate imprecision in the painterly finish. His is an extension of the process of seeing.

Pierre Haubensak’s paintings and drawings are in many museums in Switzerland, amongst others, Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau; Federal Technical High School, ETH, Zurich and Kunsthaus Zurich. His work is also in the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum, USA and the following corporate collections Ricola, Liestal; ZKB, Zurich; Credit Suisse.
